I recently received the Astral pack as a gift. I would have liked the option to try both the small and one size fits all. I have the one size fits all. It is very comfortable and no rubbing or chafing. I think the pack slips a little lower on my back due to the size. I think the small would stay higher on my back. This is the first hydration pack I have ever tried, so I can’t compare to anything else. I was worried it would make me hot, but it doesn’t. I really like all the room it has. It could be loaded down with things if needed. I do agree it needs instructions on fit and adjustment. I think it’s a very comfortable and lightweight pack. I would definitely recommend to everyone.

Sooooo…I have this vest. Last year while running the Harpeth Hills Flying Monkey (google it if you’re into very challenging road races…and if you take it on, well, consider yourself welcomed to Tennessee)! But I was around mile 20 when another female runner & I met up. At that point I had my FuleBelt around my neck — seemed like the best place as I was just done with wearing it around my waist & not being able to breathe. She started talking about her vest.

Come to find out it was an UltrAspire & when another runner was shopping for a Christmas gift for me (and she asked what was something I really needed / wanted) I told her the only thing I needed at that time was an UltrAspire Vest. I say all of that to say — this was my FIRST hydration vest, and after nearly 7 months with it, I’m still a little lost.

I will tell you I’m quite impressed for the most part. I’m only 5’3″, weighing 140 lbs, and very small in my torso. I’m soooo pleased with how the vest will size small enough to take the bounce out of the shoulders. Bouncing in the shoulders would drive me crazy & prevent me from using it — so there is NO bounce!!!

Second thing — I have an iPhone 6 in a Lifeproof Recharging Case (so a little bulky)! BUT….the front zipper pocket holds my phone perfectly & allows quick & east access for SEFLIES!!! 😉

Next — and this I just realized from the video here on the Amazon page — the elastic pocket opposite the zipper pocket in front does allow an extra water bottle. I just stuck a 12 oz FuleBelt water bottle in there & it fit like a charm!

As for 70 oz bladder, well, 24 ounces in the bladder are about all I can handle right now or it feels too heavy. I will have to gradually increase that weight.

The Bladder is easy to use & easy to clean. I don’t mind disconnecting the hose to clean — it disconnects very easy & I stuff paper towels in the bladder to make sure it’s dry. The hose is super easy to get water from while moving. I love that you just pull the end out & suck. I don’t think I would like the kind you “bite” on, so I’m glad this one doesn’t have that option. So as you can see for the most part I’m pleased!

So now for the thing I think can be improved upon.

1….INSTRUCTIONS PLEASE, Mr. Manufacturer / Creator!!!!! Really…this pack didn’t come with one lick of an instruction. This is why it’s taken me 7 months — and I still don’t have it all figured out.

For instance (and this is frustrating), the bladder should be able to stand up in the back of the pack. There’s a thing that you “think” it’s supposed to connect on inside the bladder pouch — but it’s besides me as to how to make it connect. Other vests are so easy — yes, I’ve helped friends connect theirs, this is how I know.

Bladder measurements — NOT ACCURATE!!!! I can specifically measure 24 ounces in a Blender Bottle (I do this to dissolve my NUUN in the water first before pouring into the bladder) — with markings on it — pour it into the bladder — and what is 24 ounces in the Blender Bottle is now 40 ounces in the Bladder that came with the UltrAspire — this is not cool at all as people (especially in heat) are specific to the amount of hydration they need when running.

Another thing is the “boot clips” in the front….? I only connect the top one, as I do feel the bottom one restricts my breathing — again I’m 5’3″ & although this was made for all sizes — that bottom clip does hit me a little too low.

Also, those boot clips are the HARDEST things to get connected & disconnected. Do not try this when running — you will not succeed.

Lastly. So the water hose is supposed to travel down one side, cross in front of you, and connect to one of the loops on the other side to hold in place — so it’s not just trailing down by your arm. So as long as I’ve had it it would stay secure on the “other side” just fine. Until the past two weekend runs. Now it will not stay put & just hangs down my my arm. Annoying sometimes, but sometimes I’m ignoring it.

so I think that’s about all I have to say. I did rate this as 4-stars as I believe was very generous. I do hope the creator of this pack will read this review & UltrAspire will begin including instructions on how to use their packs — especially so you can get the most benefit from it. I swear there is much more potential in this pack that I’m even aware of.

After trying the original most size fits all I did an exchange for a petite size, and found that this is what worked best for me. Thank you ultraspire for helping me through this. I’m 5’4″ at 123 lbs for sake of measurement out there. No falling off the shoulders like the original one did on me. It fits like a glove and I’m super happy to have this pack now. Thanks again!

Let me preface this with the fact that this is my first and only pack. This is because I hate to trap heat on my back and I am a bit busty so vests/packs things of that nature never appealed to me. If the girls are smashed, I can’t breathe, add that to asthma and I might as well stay home. However, this pack is AMAZING! I’ve only worn it a few times but I’m in love. It is very comfortable, sits high enough that it doesn’t trap much heat on my back, has handy pockets in easy access places and way more storage room than a girl that only heads out for 3-4 hike/runs needs.
For reference, I am 5′ 1.5″, 130lbs and somewhere between C & D cup size, depending on the garment. I am curvy and muscular but could stand to lose a little body fat (this is important for the next statement). This vest does not rub or chafe me anywhere, and I wore it with a tank-top. I did have to cut a few inches off of the drinking tube, as it was just a bit too long and extended past the edge of the vest onto my shoulder. After the minor modification, it’s perfect!

I’ve used the Astral on some trail runs and have found that it definitely isn’t a female-exclusive pack. The front of the pack is easy to adjust and I like how the pockets are big enough to hold a water bottle or camera. The pouch in the back is large enough to store my necessities including a compact jacket. The pack is well-constructed and sturdy.

I just used my new Astral in a 40 mile trail race. Overall I’m very pleased and found the design very user friendly. I had used Nathan in the past, but I like the Astral much more. It’s lighter and it sits higher on my 5’3″, 115lb frame so it doesn’t bother my low back like the Nathan did. Also the pockets open out, so you don’t have to dig around so much to find stuff. I only had a couple of small issues. First, the hose is very long. Originally I had the hose tucked around across my body, but the excess was rubbing my shoulder constantly. I found that if I just fed it through the loop and then let it hang down, it stayed in line with the pack and didn’t rub. The hose is a manual open and close and it is high volume. so if you don’t close it right away liquid will pour out. Also, because I have a small frame I have to cinch it pretty snug in the front. It’s very comfortable but getting the bands hooked back after taking it off at aid stations was not as easy as I’d like. It would be helpful if more info was added to the website on the difference between the standard and the small sizes. I emailed the company and they were very helpful, but a size guide would be good, maybe even with a diagram of the differences in fit. I purchased the standard but the small may have been a better fit. But overall, I love it and would highly recommend!

    • Amy, thank you so much for your review. Here’s a link on how to shorten the tube length: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fX5RT1A7qY8
Also, we’ll have an image up soon that illustrates the differences of the two sizes. Thanks again for your comments and support of our brand. We’re glad to hear you love your gear!

I’ve run with this once on a 10 mile trail run, and so far I’m really pleased with it. I can hardly tell I’m wearing it or carrying so much on my back. I think the placement of the water reservoir high on the back makes it less noticeable and bouncy. I was surprised by how all of my gadgets stayed still in their respective pockets. I carry a pretty large phone in the front left pocket, and I worried it would bounce around. No movement at all. I keep things that I rarely access on the higher front pockets, like a whistle and ID. It is simple to adjust and it is lightweight and cool. My only issue is with the drinking tube. I wish it had a lever that I could flick with my thumb to start the water flow as opposed to the pull-knob. Other than that, it’s fantastic.

I love this hydration pack! Super comfortable and a very flattering design. I would love it if it came in a bigger capacity to accomodate mandatory gear for ultra runs and adventure races

  9. 4 out of 5

I really like the idea of the Astral, unfortunately my frame does not make for a perfect fit otherwise I would score it with 5 stars. It slides a bit on one shoulder or the other and feels almost like it is going to slide off. Other than this I love the lightweight design of the pack as well as the separate sleeve for the hydration bladder. The front strap feels great on longer runs, supporting the necessary movement of breathing 🙂
Pocket size allows for packing snacks as well as a windbreaker for easy access.
I have a sister who is a bit larger chested/ framed than myself, she has borrowed the pack and loves it, she will be getting one for herself!

Best Women’s Hydration Vest!! Ran 15 miles through Topanga State Park yesterday and had absolutely no issues: no chafing or bouncing. Packed the vest to the max with extra gear and food to get used to the weight. Even when the vest is full, it is still very lightweight compared to other vests/packs I’ve tried (Camelbak & Nathan). I really love the fact there is minimal material covering your body, because I overheat easily.

This pack is incredible! It holds just enough stuff and rides so comfortably! I actually forget it is there! I love the large pockets on the front and the mesh in the back! A must have for any women who loves to run with a pack!

  12. 5 out of 5

The Astral is a great pack and I’m loving it. It fits well, doesn’t bounce, has plenty of storage for longer adventure runs or races, and can cinch down when you don’t need to carry as much. I’ve been training and running with the Astral since last summer and it has absolutely become my favorite, go-to pack.

  13. 5 out of 5

I’ve seen pictures and watched the product video, but it wasn’t until I tried on the pack that I fell in love with it! I’m not usually a “one size fits all” kind of person and with all of the adjustment options I was able to fit my unique body shape and I really liked the way it looked on me too. Sleek design with multiple options to carry all of my accessories, from an Ergo water bottle to my cell phone and iPod.

  14. 4 out of 5

I just went for my first run using the Astral. 10 miles. This is also my first hydration back pack. Prior to purchasing this, I was using a hydration belt. I will have to say, this pack is really great. Minimal bounce, lots of storage space, light weight, and comfortable. My only complaint is that I received the pack without any directions as to how to properly adjust the pack, fill, and care for the 2L bladder. This was disappointing and lead to some initial frustration with getting the pack ready for my run and I think that I can eliminate the bounce all together once I can properly adjust the pack for my frame. Just would have been nice to have some tips and directions from the get go.

  15. 5 out of 5

I am loving it! No rubbing, no bouncing, and no smashing the girls! My favorite is the huge capacity pockets up front! Also loving the one handed entry magnetic pill pocket! I ran 9.5 miles in the rain and everything inside stayed dry! <3 I think it might be my new favorite!

  16. 5 out of 5

I absolutely love the Astral! Until I started running in it, I didn’t know what I had been missing… Who knew a pack could be so comfortable!
I have been training in the Astral all summer, then really put it to the test when I ran Speedgoat 50k with it. After 9 long hours, and 32 steep miles, all in a sports bra, I was fully converted as the pack worked perfectly.
Women’s bodys are curvy, and the Astral embraces that in a way that makes you feel free, and uninhibited!

  17. 5 out of 5

Finally, I feel feminine when wearing a pack–but empowered! This pack is so comfortable I forget I am wearing it! It is so much easier to breathe than when wearing a pack that has pockets weighing straight down over the chest. The pockets carry in just the right places so the load is hardly felt and the weight is lower so balance feels better too. And, my fit cell phone fits perfectly, safely and securely.
